In 1991, the NVSL decided to honor one of its graduating seniors, swimmer and/or diver, with a gift that would be used to help defray some of the costs of his/her collegiate career; thus the MacDuff Scholarship was instituted. In 1994 the President's Scholarship and in 2008 the Spirit Scholarships were added. These three scholarships are supported totally by contributions from members and friends of the NVSL and are open to swimmers and/or divers. In 2010 the Swim Ninja Scholarship was instituted for swimmers.

The MacDuff scholarship was created in memory of many NVSL swimmers, divers and volunteers. The scholarship was named for George MacDuff and his daughter Melinda. George served for many years as the League's Records Chairman. This scholarship is funded in part by Mrs. MacDuff.

The President's Scholarship was named to honor all those volunteers who have served the youth of Northern Virginia and in particular those who have served as President of the NVSL.

The Spirit Scholarship was created in memory of athlete Olivia (Liv) Aull to recognize spirited swimmers and divers from within the NVSL family.

The Swim Ninja Scholarship, sponsored by Swim Ninja LLC, is awarded to an NVSL swimmer who served his or her community as a leader both in and out of the water.

The criteria for the selecting the scholarship winners include:
A swimmer's or diver's commitment and leadership to their team, especially helping others - not the number of awards they've won; school and community involvement; and a well-written essay. This year's essay was: "What is the most significant life lesson that you have learned through your participation in the NVSL?" Three letters of recommendation were also required.

Kelly Corish, who dives for Dunn Loring and Dominion Dive Club, won this year's MacDuff Scholarship. Kelly will be attending University of North Carolina in the fall where she intends to continue diving for the UNC Swim & Dive Team. Everyone who knows Kelly will tell you that she is one of the kindest, most thoughtful young ladies you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting. We wish her, and all the graduating seniors, the very best next year.
Good Luck Kelly!
