2010 NVSL Scholarship Winners Congrats to Chloe, Alex, Natalie, and Stephen! Posted by Kevin Cullather on Jul 23, 2010 12:33AM MacDuff Scholarship
Chloe was involved in all aspects of sports during her tenure at the Potomac School. She was a member of the swim and dive team serving as team captain for the 2009-2010 swim season. One interesting fact about Chloe s participation on the dive team is that during her sophomore year, she was the dive team! Team Chloe won the Independent school state championship in both 2008 and 2010. It was diving that attracted Chloe to swimming. In addition to swimming and diving, Chloe participated in track and field where her specialty was the triple jump, the tennis team, and club gymnastics. Sports were not Chloe's only interests. She was a member of the school orchestra, numerous clubs and community service organizations. Oh yes, she found time to be an honor student. In addition to her volunteer activities, Chloe coaches diving at her home pool, Sleepy Hollow Bath and Racquet. Anita O Quinn, Chloe's dive coach, states that Chloe has a strong sense of individual responsibility and the need for teamwork. She has been a role model for not only the divers, but the swimmers at Sleepy Hollow Bath and Racquet. Chloe's guidance counselor at the Potomac School writes that Chloe balances home life, school commitments and academic responsibilities with kindness, civility and generosity of spirit (part of Potomac s mission statement).
This scholarship is named to honor all of the volunteers who have served a variety of roles within the NVSL, most notably the presidents of the organization. The recipient of the Presidents Scholarship is Alexander Howe. Alex is a member of the Holmes Run Acres swim team and has been involved in the NVSL for 13 years and has received numerous team awards and honors. Alexander graduated from Falls Church High School where he served as swim team captain for the 2009 and 2010 swim seasons. He was an All-District swimmer for three years and also participated on the indoor and outdoor track teams. Alexander was the Falls Church High School student body president for the 2009-2010 school year. It must be noted that Alexander achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 13! Alex's advanced placement English teacher stated that As a student his diligence and strong work ethic earned the respect of his peers, the faculty and his coaches. The head swim coach at Falls Church High School, Christina Kwon, writes Alex has established himself as an exceptional athlete, teammate and coach, who pushed himself and his team to be the very best. Alex is one of the most naturally gifted, consistent and versatile swimmers, maybe even overall athletes that FCHS has ever seen! Alexander is the son of David and Mary Howe. Alexander plans to attend Brigham Young University. Presenting this award is Bob Mahony, NVSL President in 1995-1996 and current Rules Committee chair.
This scholarship honors the memory of Olivia Aull. Olivia was a spirited member of the Greenbriar swim team. Natalie Leake is the 2010 recipient of the Spirit Scholarship. Her goal is to combine swimming for Tech and obtaining a degree in elementary education. Natalie is a member of the Lee-Graham Swim and Dive team. While at Lee-Graham, Natalie compiled a number of team records to go along with her three NVSL records! Natalie participated in numerous clubs, activities and volunteer activities. Natalie served on the Superintendent's Advisory Council and volunteered for the Patient Support Services at INOVA Fairfax Hospital. Natalie's high school guidance counselor, Kelley Devlin, writes that Natalie has a relentless work ethic that she has used in her sport and the classroom. She does an amazing job of balancing academics, athletics, and other activities. She is well respected by her peers, teachers and coaches. Natalie is a team player!
